How It All Went Down…

Doug (SoupMan), Jason (BoulderKronick),  myself (Livin4Today), along With Steve (WannaFlyMyDrone) met up  at about 06:30 on the morning of February 4th, in Richland for a trek back up to Kittitas, WA, to meet our friend GJ (GrapeJuice) aka #UsingTheForceOffRoad from the wet side.

After grabbing fuel and snacks wee were off to conquer Colockum Pass. GJ had been up once before with me on the Dirt Lifestyle Patreon run along with The Story ‘Till Now on January 7th, and I had gone again on Jan 23rd with Eastern Washington Jeeps (FBG). Our (GJ & myself) first run up we made really good time and distance, getting to within a few miles of the pass (that was the guess on the day), and today we were out to go beyond that point and hopefully make it to the pass.

Hopes and dreams are what we all live on, right up until harsh realities slap you back, and our morning started poorly at best. GJ was running behind so we rolled out of the Shell station around 10:00ish, but I had not pre-planned anything other than having a good time (I should’ve paid mind to the maps a bit more), because we found ourselves on Colockum Rd, which was oddly familiar, but didn’t quite seem right. After we aired down, I knew why, this was the road that GJ & I had exited on after camping with Nate & Shaun and the gang.

Unfortunately, it was even icier than the route (normal entry) I had been on two weeks earlier, and that ice slapped us in the face right away, causing the explosive backward engagement of Merlin(Jason’s TJ) & RubiVaroom (GJ’s Gladiator), and Jolene (Doug’s LJ) was sliding backwards too, but got herself out of the way, nobody saw it coming…

Truth be told, we all had gotten a little complacent about the ice. I later learned from Jason, he had somehow overlooked putting Merlin into 4LO, which caused him to run out of power, then stalling, then sliding backwards into GJ. I was up ahead, and Julia (my JKU) had gotten a little squirrelly, but didn’t get too out of hand. So we turned tail and decided to other entrance would be better as we still had some hella steep grade in front of us had we continued. Not to mention, Merlin now had a breezy tail-end. So we carefully made our way back to the air-up station and proceeded to air up. I guess Merlin didn’t take too kindly to Steve taping a tarp over the rear cage and decided to throw a little bucking tantrum (we think Steve might’ve bumped him into gear), darn near took us over an embankment and into a tree after missing RubiVaroom by millimeters, thank God SoupMen have large powerful feet, or many of us wouldn’t have made it back alive. Here’s the Part 1 video, you’ll have to stay tuned for the rest of the story…
